After the war the states of Austria divided and declared independence. It became apparent that Britain, America, France and Italy would win, so in October 1918 Czechoslovakia were the first to declare independence, followed by the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs.
These were the "successor states":
1. Austria
2. Hungary
3. Czechoslovakia
4. State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs (joined with the Kingdom of Serbia on 1 December 1918 to form the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, later Yugoslavia)
